I thought it was ironic that they showed the Star Wars trailer.
In comparison it appears ILM will be out of a job in few years time.

Did anybody spot the 2 sec cut away cameo shot of Peter Jackson near the start.

Hey there.

I dont think ILM have anything to worry about for a good few years yet. Weta Digital have done a good job but there a very small company in comparison. I get the feeling there kind of standing on the shoulders of giants at the moment. ILM invented alot of the teqhniques these guys are just beging to build upon. The tools are now there. Its just the imagination that sets the boundries.

wow! this film will go down in history... i mean im a bastard when it comes to openly admitting that a film is good, this film ROCKS! it is like peter jackson has stolen a piece of my mind and saw it the same way i did!
only one or two dislikes (to be realisitic) was the cheeseyness of the hobbits at the meeting at rivendell... and the embelishement of the love theme - that's evil marketing at work... a minor one - the exclusion of tom bombadil
but these are purely because my expectations were too high. the visual impact was astounding from the start i had a childlike grin on my face - shots like the mines at moria, saruman at the orthanc - blew my mind!
the "CHANGING THE DIMENTIONS OF THW SHOTS" that sn-films you talked about is what we call "forced perspective" where objects nearer the smaller actor is bigger and stuff nearer the tall actor is smaller - good example... frodo in the wagon with gandalf at the start in hobbiton.
i cant wait to see gollum, i think he will be funny

glad to be part of this, cant wait for the DVD

i hope to get to see it over the christmas period, shame my kids aren't old enough to see it yet!

my personal opinion of LOTR thus far is that it may go down in history as a great film of a great book, but I really don't think it pushes the envelope with the effects -- as someone else has said it uses existing technique very very well, but anyway i'll have to reserve my final judgement

and the whole ILM thing I think stems from the fact that Lucas wanted ILM to do the effects because he thinks ILM are the only group who could "do cgi effects on that scale". well, that shows that George is losing touch further, all empires crumble eventually.

i think the next 'big' thing in cinema over the next few years will be the convergence to digital, projection and distribution wise. LOTR can only affirm ppl's confidence that digital IS capable.

I don't think whether the FX push the envelope or not determines whether a film is good or not.

I think cinema today (from big studios anyway) is way too reliant on FX to cover up weak story.

I haven't seen it yet (or ever read the book) but from what I've read LOTR is a very good story which, due to it's nature, happens to have a lot of FX.

I agree about cinema going digital, it just makes sense - 'bring it on' I say.

i went to see this film last night, good effects and everything but the ending was a big disappointment for me... I haven't read any of the books or anything but I came out of the cinema quite angry that they left the film at that point.

On the whole the film was good, the were like battles every few minutes and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

I think you could tell that the bits where the hobbits and humans were in the shot together were blue/green screened because of the lighting differences.

so final verdict: good on a whole but the ending was dissatisfying

I know what you mean. Ive never read the books. Its a killer having to wait a year to find out what happens next.

Im glad I missed The Empire Strike Back as the ci8nema the first time around. It would have killed me to wait a year for that.

Lord of the Rings is a great movie, too bad it didn't top Harry Potter (that peice of shit) for weekend grosses. Anyway, go see it, nuff said.
